Presse : "Most of the pleasure of the show depends on the relationship of this pair, and there is a fizzing on-stage chemistry between Robert Lindsay’s suave and practised deceiver, who offers a hilarious vocal imitation of our own Prince of Wales as he gulls his marks, and Rufus Hound’s oafish interloper." Commentaires : “The Full Monty” started life as a 1997 British film, directed by Peter Cattaneo. Set in Sheffield it was a non-musical comedy which managed to deal seriously with subjects like unemployment, father’s rights, depression, impotence, homosexuality, working-class culture and suicide. The musical version changed the setting to Buffalo, New York, but stayed very close to the film, changing some names and introducing a few new characters.
The musical opened on Broadway in October 2000 and ran for 769 performances. The London cast included six of the original Broadway cast members and received excellent notices. Dora Bryan was replaced after 12 weeks (due to “filming commitments”) by Lynda Baron, and after the agreed six months, the American leads were replaced with David Ganly (Dave), Cornell John (Noah), Ben Richards (Jerry), Paul Keating (Ethan), Samuel James (Malcolm) and Tony Timberlake (Harold). It ran for 9 months.

Presse : PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Was the show worth it? Yes, yes and again yes." You will laugh, you will scream, you might even shed a sentimental tear or two...there is no mistaking its big, raucous heart. " BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Delightful." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Marc Shaiman's urgent score, with clever, often witty lyrics written with Scott Whitman, keeps Hairspray pulsating with musical excitement as well as political anger."

Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2000-09-Playhouse Theatre-London)

Dernière : Saturday 04 November 2000
Mise en scène : Jeffrey N. Moss
Chorégraphie : Jerry Mitchell
Producteur :
Avec : Michael Cerveris (Hedwig), Elizabeth Marsh (Yitzak)
Commentaires : This fringe rock-musical premiered off-Broadway in February 1998, where it ran for two years and won several awards. Despite its cult success, the two-hander did not go down well with London critics or audiences and ran just seven weeks.
Michael Coveney in the Daily Mail said “the whole tacky experience is like watching a bad Dusty Springfield concert performed by Lily Savage with a good backing band.” A film version was made in 2001 directed by John Cameron Mitchell who also played the role of Hedwig. The film version won several awards and has become a cult classic.
Presse : THE INDEPENDENT loved the show saying, "As a musical, Hedwig has it all: melodrama, pathos, searing humour and a handful of fantastic songs. Move over Rocky Horror and make way for a brand new cult."

THE TIMES was more luke-war saying, "This off-Broadway cult looks awfully thin in the West End."

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Though small in scale, and more of a cabaret than a full-blown tune-and-toe show, there is little doubt that Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the best rock musical since The Rocky Horror Show."

THE EVENING STANDARD says, "If only Michael Cerveris, in the role of Hedwig, had the right voice and wit, then this cabaret-musical might have been able to secure the cult status and coterie appeal it achieved off-Broadway. But it turns out to be virtually a one-transexual show and Cerveris's nasal, throaty voice is all too often blotted out by the eloquent, four-strong band that pitches itself too loud."

TIME OUT says 'Hedwig', " suffers from being nowhere near as funny as it has hitherto assumed itself to be."

THE STAGE says, "American Michael Cerveris has great stage presence and a hell of a voice..."

"Likable but heavy-handed show." Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post

Presse : "You could make a case against the musical as a piece of preachy uplift about sexual tolerance. But it won me over through the quality of the lead performances, the verve of its staging and its conviction, in its fetishistic worship of thigh-high boots, that there’s no business like shoe business."
Michael Billington for The Guardian

"It may at times look as colourful as a pride carnival parade, but you can hear the creak of the production-line...it might seem ungracious to give it a kicking. But a kicking I feel obliged to give it."
Dominic Cavendish for The Telegraph

"It's good fun but, in my view, a bit too formulaic to induce rapture. You can't deny, though, that it brings a dynamic new dimension to the idea of dragging your heels."
Paul Taylor for The Independent

"The score by Cyndi Lauper is middling US rock, by-the-yard fare. Harvey Fierstein’s script has a few jolly moments but as many cliches."
Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

Commentaires : When Laura Bell Bundy decided to leave the show, producers teamed with MTV to broadcast a reality TV show to find her replacement. The show, entitled Legally Blonde - The Musical: The Search for Elle Woods, ran from June 2nd, 2008 until July 20th, 2008.
Commentaires longs: Bailey Hanks was declared the winner and replaced Bundy on July 23d, 2008. The runner-up, Autumn Hurlbert, served as Hanks' understudy. The third place contestant, Rhiannon Hansen, was given the role of Margot in the national tour. Fourth place contestant Lauren Ashley Zakrin served as the Elle Woods understudy in the national tour.
Presse : BEN BRANTLEY of THE NEW YORK TIMES: “This high-energy, empty-calories and expensive-looking hymn to the glories of girlishness, based on the 2001 film of the same title, approximates the experience of eating a jumbo box of Gummi Bears in one sitting.
JOE DZIEMIANOWICZ of NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: "The same is true of this endlessly energetic show. But for all its pep, bright colors and adorable dogs, the "Blonde" that breezed into the Palace last night is rarely - as Elle would say - superfun. It's only sorta fun."
CLIVE BARNES of THe NEW YORK POST: "Amorphous, synthetic and maniacally empty-headed music. When was it that so many Broadway musicals took 'Looney' to their hearts but managed to leave out the 'Tunes'? "
MICHAEL SOMMERS of STAR-LEDGER: "So a new star isn't born (Laura Bell Bundy) and the songs aren't all that great, but not everybody demands perfection. Certainly 'Legally Blonde' twinkles brightly enough to tickle pink many a customer seeking easy, breezy amusement. "
ELYSA GARDNER of USA TODAY: "Whatever pleasures Blonde provides...are as fleeting and superficial as highlights."
LINDA WINER of NEWSDAY: "But she and the musical are peppy and bright and, though not a smidge more shocking than its heroine's special shade of pink, the show is what Elle's sorority pals might also describe as, "Like senior year but funner."
ROBERT FELDBERG of the RECORD: "Witty, insistently engaging, warp-speed musical comedy."
ERIC GRODE of the NEW YORK SUN: "To quote from the show's intended demographic, its not gr8 but itll make you LOL. IMHO, obvs."
JOHN SIMON of BLOOMBERG: "Thrives on its secondary virtues, its production values. It will keep your interest, but is that tantamount to earning its keep? "
MICHAEL KUCHWARA of ASSOCIATED PRESS: "So why, despite the expensive glitz and an aggressive, go-go attitude, does 'Legally Blonde' only fitfully entertain? Most prominently because of a disappointing score."
DAVID ROONEY of VARIETY: "The show's good-natured appeal is undeniable, right down to the delicious, probably unintentionally cruel timing of its 'Riverdance' parody, following turgid fellow Broadway newcomer 'The Pirate Queen' into New York."

Commentaires : Cette version a eu un succès énorme à Londres… Plus qu'à Broadway. Elle a été une vraie révélation de Sheridan Smith, des hordes de fan l'attendant à la sortie des artistes.
Presse : "I can only report that the predominantly female audience with whom I saw the show seemed to be having a whale of a time and did not give a damn about the fact that the musical is little more than a nonsensical fairytale. " Micheal Billington for The Guardian /
"Totally blown away...it's ridiculously enjoyable from start to finish." Paul Taylor for The Independent / "Delightful, annoying, supremely wishful musical...Let’s overlook some forgettable tunes and welcome dance that embraces everything from skipping with ropes to spoof Riverdance...Legally Blonde is, well, fun" Benedict Nightingale for The Times / "Among feelgood musicals, Legally Blonde is right up there." Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph / "It's energetic and amusing." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard / "The plot is pap, the musical unmemorable, the dancing often hefty except for one routine with skipping ropes." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail / "This musical will not disappoint fans of the movie - it’s a faithful, funny and feel-good adaptation." Evelyn Curlet for The Stage

Love never dies (2010-03-Adelphi Theatre-London)

Théâtre: Adelphi Theatre (Londres - Angleterre)
Durée : 1 an 5 mois 2 semaines
Nombre :
Première Preview : Monday 22 February 2010
Première : Tuesday 09 March 2010
Dernière : Saturday 27 August 2011
Mise en scène : Jack O'Brien
Chorégraphie : Jerry Mitchell
Producteur :
Avec : Ramin Karimloo (Phantom ), Sierra Boggess (Christine Daaé), Joseph Millson (Raoul), Liz Robertson (Mme Giry), Summer Strallen (Meg), Niamh Perry (Fleck), Adam Pearce (Squelch), Jami Reid-Quarrell (Gangle)
Commentaires : The musical opened with previews on 22nd February 2010, originally directed by Jack O’Brien and with lyrics by Glenn Slater. Although it was praised for its lavish staging, and received a few excellent notices, it was generally felt to be clunky and exceptionally dark and gloomy. It was rapidly nicknamed “Paint Never Dries”. Later in the year a new version was rehearsed simultaneously with the evening performances and the show closed for four days in November 2010 for substantial re-writes. It re-opened with new direction from Bill Kenwright, new choreography from Bill Deamer, and some new lyrics by Charles Hart. The London production closed on 27 August 2011 after a disappointing run of fewer than eighteen months.
Presse : "There is much to enjoy in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical. The score is one of the composer's most seductive. Bob Crowley's design and Jack O'Brien's direction have a beautiful kaleidoscopic fluidity. And the performances are good. The problems lie within the book, chiefly credited to Lloyd Webber himself and Ben Elton, which lacks the weight to support the imaginative superstructure...In short, the show has much to commend it and the staging is a constant source of iridescent pleasure. But, as one of the lyrics reminds us, 'diamonds never sparkle bright unless they are set just right'. Although Lloyd Webber's score is full of gems, in the end a musical is only as good as its book. With a libretto to match the melodies, this might have been a stunner rather than simply a good night out."
Michael Billington for The Guardian

"Dismally implausible plot...The blogosphere has been teeming with views of Lloyd Webber’s long-awaited Phantom II. For some, Love Never Dies is 'Paint Never Dries', and for others the composer is at his musical best. I tend to agree with both factions....Bob Crowley (Designs] successfully evokes much of Phantasma, helped by projections of spooky horses on carousels. Yet that’s all rather cursory, as is the choreography, which doesn’t amount to a lot more than the inevitable bathing beauties bouncing about on the beach. "
Benedict Nightingale for The Times

"Lloyd Webber’s finest show since the original Phantom, with a score blessed with superbly haunting melodies and a yearning romanticism that sent shivers racing down my spine....The show may ultimately prove too strange, too dark, too tormented to become a massive popular hit, but I suspect its creepy allure will linger potently in the memory when frothier shows have been long forgotten. "
The Daily Telegraph

"What is in no doubt is the technical excellence of Jack O'Brien's seamlessly fluent, sumptuous (and sometimes subtle) production, or the splendour of the orchestra which pours forth Lloyd Webber's dark-hued, yearning melodies as if its life depended on them."
Paul Taylor for The Independent

"It doesn’t really smoke into life until the 20th minute and even then it splutters for a while. Finally, the singing and the ingenious staging combine to show the Lloyd Webber orchestration to its full glory, but, boy, it takes an age."
Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

"While Lloyd Webber’s music is at times lavishly operatic, the tone is uneven. There are no more than a couple of songs that promise to live in the memory, the duets don’t soar, and the ending is insipid. Admirers of Phantom are likely to be disappointed, and there’s not enough here to entice a new generation of fans."
Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"Sets and special effects cannot be faulted, the singing is terrific...a stunning ending. But phantastic? Afraid not."
Bill Hagerty for The Sun

"Musically, it is pleasing enough...Visually, the show is stunning in places."
Matthew Hemley for The Stage

"This is an elegant and clever sequel to Phantom...It is a great night out."
Paul Callan for The Daily Express

"While lushly orchestrated (by David Cullen with Mr. Lloyd Webber), the score is, for the most part, so slow that you have time to anticipate Mr. Slater’s next leaden rhyme. Each of the songs — which range from bathing-beauty frolics to power-chord operetta ballads — spins a single tune until it loses its tread."
Ben Brantley for The New York Times

"Frequently clunky and clumsy...Lloyd Webber's score, too, seems like a rehashed parade of pastiche and throbbing crashing-chord melodies."
Mark Shenton for Entertainment Weekly

"Watching the sequel only makes you appreciate the achievement of the original."
David Benedict for Variety

"The musical is impressive and enjoyable, even with its heavy hokum and creakiest of plots."
Warwick Thompson for Bloomberg News

Never mind Jay-Z and Beyonce, the Estefans were the original superstar music couple. She is one of the biggest selling singers of all time, while he's the mastermind producer behind dozens of massive names. What's better still is the story of their rise to fame, a true rags to riches tale, which is as close to the American dream as you can get. On Your Feet! is a new Jukebox musical which charts their careers and relationship, all soundtracked by Estefan's genre-defining greatest hits, including 'Rhythm is Gonna Get You' and 'Words Get in the Way', as well as some all-new tracks.
Presse : "The recipe may be familiar, but the flavor is fresh in 'On Your Feet!,' the half-formulaic, half-original and undeniably crowd-pleasing musical about the lives of Emilio and Gloria Estefan." Charles Isherwood for New York Times

"A paint-by-numbers portrait can still be colorful — and a kick. Case in point: 'On Your Feet!,' a predictable but entertaining show about Gloria Estefan and her music-producer husband Emilio." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"A serviceable jukebox musical." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"'On Your Feet!'... is a fine addition to the ranks of jukebox musicals." Mark Kennedy for Associated Press

"Already proving a solid crowdpleaser in previews, the show features a star-making lead performance from radiant newcomer Ana Villafane." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"Newcomer Ana Villafane (who originated the role in the show’s Chicago premiere) is a knockout in the leading role, the dazzling centerpiece of this flashy, splashy spectacle helmed by Jerry Mitchell." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Chorégraphie :
Producteur :
Avec : Samantha Barks (as Vivian Ward), Andy Karl (as Edward Lewis), Orfeh (as Kit De Luca), Jason Danieley (as Phillip Stuckey), Eric Anderson (as Mr. Thompson), and Ezra Knight (as James Morse)
Presse : "Let me make it clear that I mean no disrespect to Ms. Barks when I say that she is not Julia Roberts. Best known for playing the waifish Éponine in the movie musical Les Misérables, Ms. Barks is clearly a talented singer and actress. But being used as a paper doll for Gregg Barnes’s “I Love Julia” costumes, while speaking verbatim Ms. Roberts’s lines from the film, she has been given no chance to banish stardust memories of the woman who created her part. Directed and choreographed as if on automatic pilot by Jerry Mitchell, Pretty Woman: The Musical has a book by the original film's director, Garry Marshall (who died in 2016), and screenwriter, J.F. Lawton, with songs by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. Its creators have hewed suffocatingly close to the film’s story, gags and dialogue." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"The cast makes the most of what Pretty Woman allows them. The winsome Barks, who played Éponine in the movie Les Misérables, sings very well and has a believable connection with Karl, who undersells his sexiness wisely. Orfeh provides sass and power vocals as Vivian’s best friend, Jason Danieley is a solidly smarmy villain, and Eric Anderson injects humor and showmanship into his dual roles as a street-singing narrator and a benevolent hotel manager. But although it is capably staged, the show has no reason to exist beyond, one assumes, a desire to make money by pimping out a familiar property. Broadway can do better than the same old tricks." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"In truth, the singing is all well and good, but considering the evolution of gender politics over the last 30 years, Pretty Woman today comes off pretty tone deaf." Roma Torre for NY1

"End-of-the-'80s nostalgia rules at the Nederlander Theatre, where the cut-and-paste musical version of Garry Marshall's 1990 romantic comedy, Pretty Woman, is re-creating the cultural-touchstone movie beat for beat, set to a score by Bryan Adams and songwriting partner Jim Vallance that could easily pass for vintage FM-radio pop-rock singles. Just as the film was a stellar vehicle for Julia Roberts, the musical showcases a radiant performance from Samantha Barks as the Hollywood Boulevard prostitute that becomes the "beck and call girl" of a corporate raider. True to the famous closing scene that launched a squillion swoons, he rescues her and "she rescues him right back."" David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"With anything mature or sensual systematically removed, Pretty Woman: The Musical goes all-in on fantasy, casting two sizzling talents, Samantha Barks and Andy Karl, as bland, pretty people singing pretty Bryan Adams-Jim Vallance tunes with nothing much at stake. Stubbornly inconsequential, it’s a morally uplifting fairy tale of which everyone, young and old alike, can be skeptical." Bob Verini for Variety
